De Hoevebrouwers
Zottegem. East Flanders, Belgium
De Hoevebrouwers. Or in English, the Farm Brewery. And the place where brewmaster Kjell and wife Hilde have settled to develop their young, budding brewing operations. We're thrilled to introduce you to their new craft ales, not just because we think they're superb, but also because they buck the ever-growing trend of extreme beers. Kjell's beers go in the opposite direction - think subtlety. The de Hoevebrouwers creations are beers with character and originality, but without over-the-top strength and wild flavor profiles. Take for example the Toria, their first beer. Toria is a hoppy blond ale of 6.5% - quaffable and delightfully refreshing. More of a hop presence than your typical Belgian blond, but with a delicate bitterness that doesn't make its presence known until its lasting, subtly dry finish. A perfect summer beer. The Koekelaring, their brown ale, takes its name from a famous local cinnamon cookie from their hometown of Zottegem, made once a year during November for the holidays. Though unspiced, there is indeed a wonderful hint of cinnamon on the palate, but with a sweetness that's perfectly balanced by a strong hop presence in the back. Together, the first two unique, wholly-drinkable offerings from a new craft brewer showing the promise of many great things to come.
